Appearance: Maki's a rather unusual sight around Pern. She's got dark red hair with enough brown in it to make it actually look red rather than orange. And her eyes are bright green. Her skin is pale and covered with freckles, especially her face and arms. She is tall for a girl, at 5-8, and slender. And surprisingly graceful, from how long she spends hunting in the forests. She's got a good curve in her hips, and she takes advantage of that to carry things whenever she needs to. And she carries around a wooden bow in a quiver, and always has her hunting knife stashed somewhere on her person.
Personality: Stubborn. That's one word to describe Maki. She's not very good at saying what she really means, and she tends to try to change the topic if the conversation makes her uncomfortable. She's just not a very open book, and she tends to keep her distance from other people. Well, everyone except Kayami. Around him, and anyone who's taken the time to get to know her, she's easily embarrassed, kind and almost too trusting. Which is why she tries to keep her distance from people.
History: Maki and Kayami were born on the same day, but they're not twins. Not even related. Their families were part of a merchant caravan, Maki's mother hailing from Igen Hold, her father from Ista. The pair were inseparable from the time they could toddle, and they were basically brother and sister, without actually being related.
At seven, they started collecting things they found along the roads, seeing what they could sell and what never would. This is how Maki found a pair of flitter eggs, one for her and one for Kayami. Her egg hatched into a Ruby flit, a little girl that Maki named Rosetta. Kayami's Hatched into a male Dusk, named Perchant.
They were ten when the hunters of the group decided it was time for them to learn to hunt. Each of them was given a bow and knife, and they each got a different teacher. It was the first time they had done things by themselves, rather than together, but they found out that it was fun to share stories at the end of each lesson, before they went to bed each day. They would hunt for their meat, the wild heardbeasts and wherries, and other creatures that roamed the forests and grasslands. They were both good, but Maki was a better shot, though Kayami was better at preparing the meat and sneaking around to surprise their prey.
She was thirteen when she stumbled upon an abandoned puppy, old enough to eat solid foods but too young to survive on its own. She brought it back to the caravan, and they decided that she could keep it, and she'd train it to be a hunting and guard dog. Kayami helped her train the canine, which she named Rin. Rin became the guard dog for the caravan, and she listened decently well to everyone, but she only really liked Maki.
They had heard rumors of the massacre that happened at Black Sands Weyr when they stopped at Black Sands Hold to barter with some crops they'd gotten from a cothold on the other side of White Plains. Maki and Kayami had just finished selling their dried meat, the ones that had turned out good enough to sell anyway. They'd happened upon the Harper of the Black Sands Hold, who told them the news. They shared it with the caravan, and as a group they determined that they should go offer their help to the Weyr, whatever help they may be. Maki and Kayami were told to go ahead of the others, to let the Weyr know that the caravan was on its way.
