For all that he had stood here, had been chosen here, had watched from the stands as clutches hatched and newborn dragons chose their riders, the Hatching Grounds still held an almost mystical quality in Sh'ae's mind. With only one queen left upon whom the fate of their weyr rested, and her maiden flight hopefully coming soon, Sh'ae had found himself drawn to the sands, remembering that day seven turns ago when Tzeth had hatched and chosen him. How long would it be before those who were currently candidates would get their chance? How long before the next generation of dragon shells would harden on these sands and bring the weyr past simply surviving after the deaths which had plagued them an allow them to truly claim to be thriving once more.
You are being silly Tzeth said as he watched his rider walk the sands. The ruby was perched on one of the dragon ledges, his eyes whirling in shades of amusement. "Probably" Sh'ae replied cheerfully. He continued to walk over the sands, his eyes closed as he focused on the feel of the sand under his boots and the way the space amplified any sounds which happened within it. Destinith will rise when she rises. We will be here when that happens and we shall have our chance to prove ourselves. And then there shall be younglings once again and all shall be well Sh'ae opened his eyes and looked up at his dragon with a smile. Dragon logic was odd sometimes, but it couldn't be argued with. Tzeth was right, he was focusing on things which had no real import. He should look to the future.
That is better Tzeth pronounced, gliding down from his perch to land before his rider. Sh'ae smiled and moved in close to scratch the ruby's eyeridge. "What do you think?" He asked "How long before we have eggs here again?" Not long Tzeth replied Destinith will be ready soon Sh'ae startled a little at that, for the ruby had not spoken so certainly of the queen when he had asked him before. "You know something I don't?" He asked Many things Tzeth replied in a teasing tone But that's not very hard to do Sh'ae snorted and slapped the dragon on the shoulder.
Leaning back against the dragon, Sh'ae's eyes followed a gleaming golden form as Kaeri took off from his shoulder in order to make her own exploration of the shadowy cavern, her freshly cleaned hide catching every bit of light. It was oddly relaxing in here, with the quiet gloom proving to be a rather soothing thing to be standing in the middle of.

The Ruby and His were being watched, although they were not aware of the watcher. But then, she preferred it that way, and her arms crossed across her chest as she cocked her head slightly. Though she heard only one side of the conversation, she could hazard a guess for the other half, given where the Kingpair was currently. Her own mind reached out, lightly touching to her dark Queen's, and Destinith stirred, gently touching back, though she was groggy and reluctant to move from her sunning spot. Chuckling soundlessly, Auralina calmed her, letting her know she was safe and did not require the content Ebony's presence. That alone, however, caused Destinith to stir, the dark form rising and taking flight, soaring into the Hatching Grounds, where she could sense her Bonded one was. Seeing the Sands themselves occupied by the gleaming King, she whuffed lightly and settled instead to one of the spectator ledges, eyeing Tzeth calmly, before turning wedge shaped head towards where Her's stood at the top of the Stands.
I was trying not to be noticed, you, her rider chided her gently, to which she merely snorted, and Aura chuckled, padding down the steps and leaning against the railing separating the Hatching Sands from the Stands. "Hello Sh'ae," she said mildly, her slender, five foot two frame seeming rather small in comparison to the Grounds, to his Ruby, and mostly to her Ebony. The Queen, however, was not at all put off by having such a tiny rider. She knew better, and she would make sure that all of her dragons did too.

Sh'ae and Tzeth both looked up as the dark form of the ebony queen joined them in the hatching ground. The ruby king's eyes whirled the colours of happiness as he watched his queen. My greetings Destinith He greeted the ebony.
"Lady Auralina" Sh'ae gave the woman a low bow, managing to make the gesture a playful one, as well as one of respect. "It is good to see you out and about" Some of the other king riders had voted for ding their utmost to wrap their sole remaining queen rider in cotton wool. While Sh'ae certainly supported the need for caution when it came to their last queen and her rider, he also knew that trying to restrict her in such a way would only breed resentment and get in the way of doing the tasks which only a queenrider could do.
With a final rub of Tzeth's eyeridge, Sh'ae left the ruby's side and moved to make his way up to stand beside the queen rider and lean on the railing next to her. "How are you holding up?" He asked her softly, one arm lifting to provide an easy landing spot for Kaeri as she returned to him. The gold landed on his arm and then climbed to settle on his shoulder, giving the woman beside her human a cheerful greeting. Though Sh'ae's grey eyes might appear to be looking over the sands, his focus was upon Auralina and her response to his presence. He wouldn't admit it, but he'd had something of a crush on her for some time, and even had he not, her well-being would be something of great concern to him.
Tzeth shifted on the sands, looking up at Destinith. Will you join me? He asked her.

You take up quite a bit of space, dear Ruby. Destinith replied mildly, her tail tips flicking, but she shifted and soared down to settle lightly. The good thing about the Sands of Black Sands was that they could house multiple Queens, and even a WherQueen should it come to that, all at the same time, so the Ebony's comment had been mere teasing, especially given she was larger than him. How fare you?
Aura gave him a wry smile and a dismissive hand wave, then looked towards their dragons. "I see no reason to hide, even with all this chaos going on," she said calmly. "The Weyr must be made to see that their new Seniors are not afraid to show themselves and LEAD. That is, after all, our job. And besides, there are many responsibilities that I have that I will not foist off on another's shoulders, for I quite enjoy them." As she said this, two forms popped in, one darting to her shoulder and settling there, the other hovering before Sh'ae and chirping a slightly flirtatious greeting to Kaeri. "Oi, Sapphire, come here you rascal," she chided the Blue gently, and he came to settle to her other shoulder with his 'sister', who chattered at him with almost the same chiding tone as Aura's voice had held.

Kayami was exploring by himself for once. Not even his Dusk was with him. Of course, Maki had chores to do, so... He was left to do his own thing. He left his bow in the Candidate barracks, but he carried his hunting knife on his hip. It was something that had just become a habit, especially when they traversed the roads that were frequented by bandits.
He was walking past the Sands when he heard voices within.
"I see no reason to hide, even with all this chaos going on. The Weyr must be made to see that their new Seniors are not afraid to show themselves and LEAD. That is, after all, our job. And besides, there are many responsibilities that I have that I will not foist off on another's shoulder, for I quite enjoy them."
That could only be Weyrwoman Auralina... He took a breath and stepped inside. "Lady Auralina, your words ring true," he agreed. "However, everyone deserves a period of mourning. Forgive me if I speak out of turn, but this was thrust upon you recently, was it not?" He stopped for a moment and walked closer, palms open and down at his sides. "Everyone deserves a time of mourning, milady. Ah, forgive me, I have yet to introduce myself." He bowed to her. "Kayami Caravanborn, milady. I arrived here just recently, about a half day before my caravan family did. Though they wished me to tell you that they must be getting back to the road soon, though Father does wish there was more they could do." He raised his head, but kept his eyes averted. He wasn't used to speaking so formally, but some things had to be said...
And... Just how was he supposed to act around the Weyrwoman anyway? That had never been in any of their lessons. Well, the general bits of respecting one's elders and those ranked higher than oneself were included, but there were no specifics on how to act around a Weyrwoman...
