Auralina was panicking...
This was not a normal occurrence, and her Ebony was watching her intently, crooning, trying to soothe the agitation running through the slender figure seated at her desk. In her hand, a letter delivered only moments before by a Telgar-marked Brown, immediately opened and read, as the Brown had been highly agitated, a sure sign his PERSON was. And now?
Now Aura knew why.
Rising from her seat, she looked to her Queen. "Call the Kingriders," she said firmly, and Destinith bowed her great head, then turned and padded to her ledge. ALL Bronze- and Rubyriders are to report to the Meeting Room at ONCE! The voice, cold and agitated, slid into the minds of all those of her Weyr, its tone brooking no argument. If even ONE of them was missing, her tone clearly stated that someone would be in a LOT of trouble.
Nodding, Aura turned and paced through her door, striding down the steps with the letter in hand. Her two fire-lizards darted about her head, creeling anxiously, and she clucked gently to them, trying to calm them at least a little before this had to take place. Almost stalking into the Meeting Room, she took note of those already present and padded to her seat at the head of the table, not even flinching as she refused to sit down. Setting the letter down, all she did was lean over it and wait.

N'ren was in his weyr when Dioxyth and he both heard the Queen's call. "Wonder what this is all about," N'ren said with a frown, and his dragon rumbled. I have no idea the King said, also confused. "She wasn't overly informative, but I'm not about to argue with her either, since she didn't sound happy. I do hope everything is okay..." Patting the silvery hide, he strode past him and down through the Weyrwalls until he reached the room, bowing his head to his Weyrwoman, then taking the seat assigned to him when he'd become a Wingleader.

((sorry for length )) V'nel was lounging in his weyr when Lendalth perked his head up suddenly. The Queen calls us. We must go.He nodded and rose. His weyr wasn't too far from where Lendalth implied they were to go, so he walked briskly to the area. He nodded a greeting to the Weyrwoman, and smiled at the others who were already there before taking a seat.

Sh'ae has been in the middle of practise when Tzeth quietly touched his mind. A few accidents early on and taught Tzeth to be gentle when his rider was working. Sh'ae had always made certain to keep up with the skills he had learned during his time in the guard, and the recent troubles had only re-enforced to him that when he knew was not just useful, but necessary. What's wrong Tzeth? It wasn't like the Ruby to be feeling so agitated and worried. Destinith calls. Auralina needs us in the meeting room if the choice of meetingplace hadn't been enough to clue Sh'ae in, then the serious tone in Tzeth's voice would have been more than enough.
He paused just long enough to wipe himself down and pull on a shirt before heading for the meeting room. He could see Tzeth, the ruby perched out on their ledge, looking with longing at where Destinith was. Tzeth had as much of a crush on the queen as Sh'ae did on her rider. The ruby's tail was flicking with agitation and Sh'ae found himself having to block his best friend from his mind in order to focus on what was happening without those strong emotions, which were being communicated from the queen to his dragon and then into him, getting in his way.
"Auralina?" He spoke the woman's name softly as he approached, setting his hand on the side of her shoulder for just a moment in a silent offer of support, before moving to stand by his own seat. Tzeth's worries, and his own, had him a little to wound up to sit, especially when Aura was clearly so tense and worried with whatever news had caused her to call for all the king riders in the weyr.

She waited only until they were all assembled, then frowned and poked the letter before her. "We have a massive problem," she stated tightly. "This letter was just delivered to me by a Brown fire-lizard claiming Telgar as his home. I've read it several times, and there are no mistake. Our brothers in the North have spotted crackdust falling over several of their flight areas." She watched them, her emerald green eyes bright with worry, but also gleaming with determination. "You all know what crackdust is, of course," she said, the comment rhetorical and not meant to be answered.
"Our Enemy has returned, and is warning us of its arrival... We don't know if it has Fallen elsewhere or not, or if, for the moment, it has been limited to the North's northernmost regions. I'm sincerely hoping we have at least some time, but we must be more alert. Our Wings are to kick up their Drills. I want at LEAST three a Sevenday per Wing. We MUST be ready!"
--------------------
N'ren frowned as she spoke, then his pale eyes widened in shock. The Red Star was only just showing up! How could Thread be falling already. "They're sure of it?" he asked, and the Weyrwoman nodded.
"They checked the areas it had fallen, and watched it from a distance. Some of it fell just South enough to not freeze, so they flamed it," she replied, and the Bronzerider nodded, then looked to his fellows, wondering at their reactions. How would they take this news?

Sh'ae frowned as he listened to Auralina give her news. Crackdust, the first sign of threadfall.
Crack dust, blackdust, turn in freezing air. Waste dust, spacedust, From Red Star bare.
The old poem, part of a much longer saga, had always stuck in Sh'ae's mind. It had sat more consciously in his mind since the day he had impressed to Tzeth, and with the dragons become more and more restless of late, the queens breeding more often, Sh'ae had thought on the teaching songs about thread quite a bit. They said that nothing could prepare you for your first sight of thread, for your first fight against it. He supposed that was true. Certainly nothing in his training as a guard had quite prepared him for the first time he had been in a serious fight.
"We'll need to set up watches around our lands" Sh'ae said "Not just at the major holdings, but all over. We can put the retired riders on the task, and perhaps the weyrlings, once we have some. It'll be good practice for them" He hummed thoughtfully to himself "Can we get a map in here? We can mark out possible spots to set up a watch and then have the sweep riders look for the best location while their out"

T'val had been in the middle of giving Neropth a thorough oiling. The ruby had risen up on his haunches, neck extended toward the queen's weyr, a split second before both of them heard the call. The rider sighed down at his dripping hands, then at his dragon's half-oiled hide. He hated leaving the job unfinished, but even Neropth couldn't object. Destinith's summons sounded urgent.
Thus, T'val trickled into the meeting room with the last of the king riders, still rubbing his hands on his riding leathers. Oil never washed off easily, but at least it kept his skin supple like Neropth's, he supposed. He nodded cordially to the other men assembled, then more deeply to the Weyrwoman before taking his place. Auralina's posture made him frown. Something must be wrong, indeed. His stomach knotted, and he was grateful for the waves of reassurance pulsing to him courtesy of his stalwart ruby. No more riders had been lost, or the Weyr would know, so what could it be?
Even tensed as he was for bad news, the reality of it jolted him. He rocked back on his heels, letting out a slow breath. Disbelief flared and fizzled, replaced by a surge of adrenaline tempered by concern. Eyes flickered to N'ren and Sh'ae as they spoke, and he found himself nodding along with Tzeth's rider's suggestions.
"We should mobilize the Weyrfolk, too," he said. "Check on firestone stores. Perhaps the Candidates could be of use sorting stone?" His mind was already racing, contemplating the ins and outs of an augmented drill schedule.
Neropth, alert the Wing. I think a full meeting is in order once we've finished here.

Aura listened to all of them calmly, quietly, her eyes continuing to flash with determination to keep her people safe. Their suggestions were all good, were sound, and her lips twitched faintly with pride as she flicked her gaze between her Kingriders. "All sound suggestions, good sirs," she said mildly, letting her pride sound in her voice. "We will be more than ready for this menace when it hits us. I just hope we have TIME...." She frowned. "Destinith's clutch will not be ready, and we do not have enough dragons right now..." Her eyes darkened to greet her frown. "And the other Weyrs have already stated they will be unable to assist us."
